Life without Trash Removal - Program Four

Would you know how to manage your trash in case of an emergency?

"Life Without Trash Removal" is an audio program brought to you by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe´s Environment Division, one of the nation´s most advanced Tribal environmental programs in the country. Life Without Trash Removal provides information that assists you in managing your solid wastes when normal trash removal services can´t be provided. Join us each week to learn the best management practices to use when regular services are not available.

FOUR 8/13/2012

Garbage contains a lot of stuff, which is not good for the environment. Some of the stuff is manufactured with lots of chemicals.  If we look at the garbage today we will find glues or adhesives, plastics, like from coated papers/mailers or plastic straws.  There are a lot of synthetic products out there. And all this stuff contains cancer causing chemicals like benzene or PCB’s.  Once burnt, it gets airborne and into our children’s and elders lungs.  What doesn’t get into the lungs gets deposited either on the ground or floats around to impact other people.  This is called particulate matter and has been shown to increase asthma attacks.

Each week we will have another program added to our series of "Life without trash removal." Thank you / Niawen for listening to the program. These programs are funded by a grant from the US EPA. Be mindful of what is in your trash and think about what you would do if there were no collection services for an extended period of time.
